Day 99 – From tentsite to Ash Campground, mile 1468

July 28.

Got up early at 5.20am. Night was nice cool, a good refreshment. Poptart in the tent, coffee after breaking down the tent. Then started chatting with Flower… At the end, we only started hiking at 6.45am.

Just 8 miles by 10am, so I kept pushing.

Lunch and water at 1230pm at 1456, 15 miles done. The views remained limited due to the smoke. I was supposed to have a great view on Mt Shasta by now… Judge for yourself, that’s the best view I would get before coming into the town of Mt Shasta days later.

Peak of Mount Shasta floating above the smoke

Motivated by other hikers and their talk about a creek at the Ash campground, I kept pushing and made it there by 6.20pm – 28 miles today.

Pitched tent and took a bath in the river. Rinsed my clothes. Mashed potato dinner, chat with Gusty. In tent by 9pm.

Day 98 – From Burney Falls to tentsite, mile 1441

July 27.

Burney Falls

Got up 5.30am, left camp 6am. My tent was covered in ash this morning.

Took some photos of the beautiful Burney Falls, on trail 6.45am.

With the good start, I made my usual 10 miles by 10am. Getting water at Screwdriver creek, running into bigger group of hikers. Flower also there.

With 14 miles at 12pm, took a lunch break at Peavine creek.

Thinking about how many miles I wanna do today. It’s hot again and not as flat as the last days.

Song of the day: Herbert Grönemeyer – Wunderbare Leere

The landscape varied a bit, especially the trees. But the haze caused by the nearby forest fires remained the whole day.

I saw the group with Flower several times – they were aiming at a 28 miles campground. Too much for me… But it’s either 21 miles or 28 miles with water or dry camping in between.

It’s funny – I ended up as being one of the first to pitch my tent around mile 24 – all others moved by first and then ended up camping just hundred feet further.

Walking in the twilight all day caused by the smoke isn’t easy.

The night turned out to be good since it was cool, maybe due to the exposed location on a saddle and the altitude of 5200 feet.

Day 97 – From forest road 22 to Burney Falls NP campground, mile 1417

July 26.

Got up 6.20am. Slowly getting there… Few other hikers were active. Broke down my tent, had a coffee and a poptart for breakfast. Starting walking 6.10am – an early start for me, nice. My plans for today were ideally 25 miles again, that would take me to the Burney Falls campground. It has shower and laundry facilities – I am just not too sure how good the store is for the resupply.

Shortly after leaving the tentsite, I saw a skunk crossing the trail in front of me! First time I saw a skunk on trail! I made some noise and kept distance… You don’t want to mess with one of these – also considering that I have basically no clothes to change…

Smokey air all morning, as it turned out the whole day. The sun appeared in a deep red on the horizon.

Passed the 1400 miles marker.

Around 1pm came into Burney Mt Guest Ranch. A great place with friendly people. There were not many hikers around, it was easy to take a quick shower and do laundry. Their little store was well stocked with fair prices to resupply until Mt Shasta. Chatted with Crumbs and Gusty.

Left at 4pm – that was really effective.

Arrived Burney Falls around 7.30pm. Quick stop at the shop that closes at 8pm: chocolate, soft drinks, beer and chips.

Sitting with a bunch of other hikers including Flower/Colin and Nightwalker until 8.30pm – too tired then, went to the designated hiker area and pitched my tent. In tent by 9pm.

Long day, but really effective. 26 miles. And resupply done.

Day 96 – From Hat Creek to water cache at forest road 22, mile 1391

July 25.

Woke up only 5.40am, broke down my tent and had breakfast with oatmeal and coffee. Hit the trail only at 7am.

Walked by Old Station, went to JJs Cafe around 10am for the Blueberry Pancakes special breakfast. Charged my phone, enjoyed quite fast WiFi. Two blog updates. Hiked out again an hour later.

Uphill out of Old Station, more than 30 degrees. Passing a car parking, a nice lady offered cool oranges, some chatting about hiking and her brother, a former triple crowner.

Lunch break in the shade of a tree from 1230pm to 1.45pm.

Walked by the only water source before the water cache at road 22, was contemplating to climb down the 300 feet to the water. But under a tree were two hikers Serenity and Gusty – offering a liter cold water! Thank you guys.

Some miles later trail magic, but nothing left except some liters water. Last stop before camp around 5pm to relax the feet and enjoy some shade.

6.15pm at the water cache at Forest road 22 – and trail magic by CopperTone! Sitting there until 7pm… Getting really tired. Pitched my tent in the trees. The two hikers from South Korea who had pitched their tents next to mine last night also decided to stay here.

24 miles today. Good. Tired. And dirty – no water here to wash the dirt away.

Day 95 – From Domingo Lake to Hat Creek, mile 1367

July 24.

Slept pretty well, got up 5.30am. Taking down my tent became a challenge – the ground was so dense that I could not get some stakes out. Had to dig them out. With that, I was late and decided to have breakfast on the go. Started hiking 6.15am, chewing on a poptart and later a cliff bar.

Came back to trail quickly and entered Lassen NP.

Boiling springs were the first volcanic sightseeing spot.

Chatting with another hiker Bottomless.

Came to Drakesbad at 8.30am – just in time for breakfast. One hot plate with scrambled eggs, bacon, biscuits and gravy and all you can eat from the buffet – including yogurt, fresh fruits… PCT discount was just 9.75usd. 😎Shared the table with two other PCT hikers.

Moved on 9.30am – need to do at least 20 miles today to get out of Lassen NP, possibly a bit more if I want a tentsite with water.

Lunch break at Lower Twin Lake, mile 1355 at 1pm. 13 miles done, decent.

Walking for miles through the burnt dead forest. A breeze coming towards me is welcome – quite a heat today. But the sweating is better than yesterday – I feel I am getting back my strength.

Suddenly a loud crack and a big branch drops next to a dead tree to the right of the trail. I startle – but it was nothing.

That breeze is maybe the reason why I nearly run into a deer. It is just standing there, maybe 5 meters in front of me and seems to be sniffing. I quietly talk to it and it jumps away.

I have to pass through Lassen NP on one day since bear canisters are required for overnight wilderness usage. And I have sent my canister away right after Sonora pass – like probably 99% of all hikers.

Cactass and Tinkle had even seen a bear with cubs when walking through Lassen NP two days earlier.

After talking this photo, I was looking at the trees for a while. I took a sip of water and turned back to the trail when I saw a big black bear strolling towards the trail, this time maybe 30 meters away. Taking out my camera, I started quietly talking to the bear. The bear stopped, looked in my direction and lifted his nose to sniff. And again – with the wind coming towards me, it seems he couldn’t identify me. For a few moments, it just looked at me like. I coughed. It ran. Wow. Now I know why they say don’t run from a black bear. Despite the size, it ran away fast through the forest with branches cracking.

Short break at the border of Lassen NP at mile 1363, 4.30pm. 21 miles so far – all other miles today are optional.

Made it 6.30pm to a tentsite at Hat Creek. Pitched my tent, washed in the river (again! 😜), also rinsed my shirt. Hat chafing issues under my left arm again – might be the salt from too much sweating. While eating mashed potatoes as dinner I realized that I am still not very hungry. Strange – considering the 25 miles of today. Might have to do with the long break I had due to my cold.

Good day – more miles than I thought. I feel tired, but from the walking, not the cold.
